Starting out right
On this course, I’ll pass on the insights gained from my professional training in both Korea and Stoke-on-Trent to equip you with a strong foundation in the basics of wheel throwing.
In pottery, starting with good technique is everything: it’s the essential tool to help you realise your creative ideas. So we don’t rush things, and spend the time to really get the basics right. Classes are capped at four students, allowing plenty of time and space for individual attention, ensuring no one feels left behind.
Over six weeks, we’ll go through the entire pottery process from start to finish: from correctly preparing clay to throwing, turning, handling, and finally glazing. On the way, I'll be sharing lots of hints and tips I wish I'd known when I was starting out!

Complete beginners who have never thrown on the wheel before
Those with some previous experience who want to strengthen their foundational skills

Topics to be covered include:
Clay preparation
Centring clay on the potters wheel
Efficiently pulling walls, and shaping them into simple forms
Trimming the bases and walls of pots
Using traditional techniques to pulls handles on mugs and cups
Glazing bisque-fired pots
Good studio practice

Price includes all tools, materials, and 4-6 glazed and fired pots (ready for collection maximum four weeks after the course finishes). Tea and coffee provided.
Improvers throwing

On this course, you’ll start to refine the skills you need to be a more confident, independent maker, and to see your creative ideas turned into finished pieces. Using the strong foundational skills built in the beginners course, we’ll move on to larger, more complex forms, aiming to throw more accurately and consistently. With classes capped at 4 people, there will be plenty of time and space for individual technical troubleshooting, and for guidance with individual projects and interests.

Unlike the beginners courses, the forms and techniques to be covered in this class will be guided more by students’ individual needs than a set curriculum. Topics to be covered could include:
Centring and throwing larger amounts of clay
Getting more height in your pots
Developing more complex, multi-part forms, such as pots with gallery and lids
Repetition throwing - throwing consistent, identical forms
Throwing and altering to make off-round forms
Additions - lips, handles, lugs, knobs
